What You'll Do
Mapbox is seeking a Machine Learning Engineering Manager to join our Navigation team during an exciting growth phase. With a background in ML engineering, you'll bring deep expertise in machine learning concepts, algorithms, and project development from scratch to production. You'll lead the team creating cutting-edge machine learning solutions for vital company-wide projects such as HD Mapping, ETA Engine, Roads, and more. Your input and expertise will have a direct impact on business decisions and play a vital role in driving the business forward.
In this role, you can expect to:
- Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of machine learning engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative culture that promotes continuous learning and development.
- Provide technical leadership to the machine learning team, assisting with technical challenges, guiding architectural decisions, and ensuring that projects align with our technology strategy and business goals.
- Oversee the end-to-end execution of machine learning projects, from problem formulation and data collection to model development, deployment, and monitoring.
- Establish and lead Machine Learning Ops initiatives to support ML deliveries, overseeing tasks like dataset updates, training loops, monitoring internal and production metrics, and ensuring proper versioning of models.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to define the machine learning roadmap and long-term strategy, identifying innovation opportunities and staying updated on industry trends to keep our team at the forefront of AI technology.
- Work closely with product managers, data engineers, and other stakeholders to define project requirements, prioritize tasks, and communicate progress effectively.
- Attract, hire, and retain top machine learning talent, fostering career growth plans for team members through coaching and training opportunities, empowering them to reach their full potential.
- Ensure the quality and reliability of machine learning models and solutions through rigorous testing, validation, and monitoring processes.
What We Believe are Important Traits for This Role
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field. Ph.D. is a plus.
- Proven experience (5+ years) in leading and managing machine learning or AI teams.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and relevant ML libraries/frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).
- Experience with cloud computing platforms (in particular AWS)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- A track record of successfully delivering machine learning solutions in a production environment.
- Knowledge of best practices in ethical AI and data privacy is a plus.
