Staff Software Engineer
Boundless Immigration
Who Boundless is
We’re a team of immigrants and experts who have struggled with our own journeys through the complex, high-stakes U.S. immigration system. That is why we are building deeply customer-centric products and experiences to become the default trusted partner for all families and businesses. We are the largest player in the family immigration industry, and a high-growth challenger serving corporate clients. Across both consumer and business segments, we’ve aided over 100,000 individuals and 1,000 businesses to successfully navigate the convoluted immigration process.
We're backed by influential venture investors around the country, including Foundry Group (led by Brad Feld), Trilogy Equity Partners, Pioneer Square Labs, Emerson Collective (Laurene Powell Jobs’ foundation), Two Sigma Ventures, and Jerry Yang.
Today, we are a dynamic growth-stage technology company with 350+ employees across the U.S. and Philippines. We are growing both organically and through strategic acquisitions. We are well-capitalized and on our way to becoming the largest immigration company in the world and first trusted brand in the industry.
What you’ll do
As a Staff Software Engineer at Boundless, you’ll serve as a technical lead across key initiatives, shaping architecture and engineering best practices while delivering meaningful product experiences for immigrants and their families. You will partner closely with cross-functional stakeholders to solve complex, high-impact problems, and guide other engineers in making thoughtful technical decisions. You will also help scale the engineering organization by actively contributing to hiring, onboarding, and shaping a collaborative, inclusive culture.
During your first month, you will:
- Learn by doing with your team. Ramp up quickly by contributing to one of our major initiatives, shipping code to production within your first 2 weeks
- Dive into our architecture and technical practices through pairing, documentation, and collaboration
- Learn how Boundless operates from our mission and customers to our product development and career growth frameworks
- Discover our process and practices. Throughout your first month you’ll learn about our practices & process; the way we plan and ship our work.
Within three months, you will:
- Take technical ownership of a major product or service area, driving architectural decisions and collaborating with other tech leads
- Partner with PMs and stakeholders to translate ambiguous problems into clearly defined technical solutions
- Lead technical discovery and planning for cross-team initiatives
- Help define and uphold engineering standards, ensuring code quality, performance, and testability
- Participate in hiring processes, helping us attract and assess top engineering talent
Within a year, you will:
- Consistently lead complex, multi-sprint efforts
- Propose and execute on structural improvements to the codebase, technical processes, or infrastructure
- Mentor engineers, supporting their growth and increasing overall engineering velocity
- Play a key role in scaling the engineering team by refining our hiring practices, supporting candidate evaluation, and contributing to onboarding
- Actively foster an inclusive, high-trust engineering culture that reflects Boundless’s mission and values
About this position
You are a strong full-stack engineer with deep backend or systems expertise. You love mentoring and unlocking others’ potential. You strike the right balance between pragmatism and technical excellence. You’re curious about our mission and passionate about using your skills to build systems that scale with care.
You will work with a variety of technologies including Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React/Typescript. We don’t require you to initially be an expert in all of these technologies but we do expect you to have expertise in one and be willing to learn others quickly. Solid understanding of security practices is a big plus for this position.
You might work on things like:
- Integrate AI tools into our core application to dramatically decrease the time our legal team spends writing.
- Implement task windows to allow an applicant a few more days to gather some information.
- Plan and implement the migration and deprecation of a core service (eg post acquisition).
- Build chained applications for visa applications that always follow the same progression. One of these is PERM to I-140 to Adjustment of Status. Instead of treating these as one off applications, we updated our architecture so that these are now treated as a chain of applications. This means applicants will not need to re-enter as much information and we can also accurately project when the next application should be started (which is dependent on information from previous applications).
About you
- 10+ years of experience in software development, with a strong background in backend systems and product-driven engineering
- Demonstrated experience designing and delivering scalable architecture in production environments
- Proficiency in at least one modern backend framework (Rails preferred, but not required) and working knowledge of modern JavaScript frameworks
- Comfortable working across the stack and owning features end-to-end
- Deep commitment to code quality, reliability, and thoughtful testing practices
- Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and leading by influence
- Collaborative and effective communicator, especially when navigating ambiguity
- Passionate about building inclusive, high-performing engineering teams through hiring, mentorship, and cultural leadership
- Eager to contribute beyond code; whether that’s through onboarding, project scoping, or helping shape the future of engineering at Boundless
