What We Do

The Navigation EV Team at Mapbox is responsible for the end-to-end development of the Electric Vehicle (EV) charging experience on a global scale. This consists of a cloud-based EV Platform, mobile SDKs, and frameworks providing a seamless integration of our enterprise customers to our EV Platform.

We are a small, collaborative, and innovative team building and refining two major APIs:

  1. The EV Search API enables location discovery for customers who are looking for an EV charging station and its exact location;
  2. The EV Charging Session API enables EV POI reservations, charging session management, payments and billing, as well as a variety of ETL and data pipeline processes that ensure that EV charging station data is kept up-to-date.

What You'll Do

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Navigation EV Team, you will be instrumental in shaping the future of Electric Vehicle (EV) navigation by developing innovative tools and services for EV charging experiences. Your role will involve juggling the fast-paced development of new features with the reliability and scalability of our services as they expand to accommodate increasing demand, diverse markets, and unique use cases. In a typical week, you might be crafting robust application code to handle global EV data, building and deploying microservices, diagnosing complex system behaviors driven by global market trends, or facilitating continuous delivery at Mapbox.

In this role, you can expect to:

  • Collaborate with your team to identify and define tasks that contribute to the development of our EV charging experience.
  • Take ownership of the scope, ensuring timely delivery with high-quality standards.
  • Design systems and make decisions that will accommodate the rapid growth of Mapbox’s EV user base.
  • Foster a culture of operational excellence through rigorous testing and monitoring of our systems and code, writing comprehensive documentation, and being on-call to ensure the health of our services.
  • Work towards reducing technical debt, sharing your knowledge, and investing in the well-being and professional growth of your teammates, while optimizing application performance and accelerating feature development.
  • Uphold a culture of collaboration, transparency, creativity, inclusion, and data-driven decisions.

What We Believe are Important Traits for This Role

  • Passion for developing solutions that advance the user experience for Electric Vehicles!
  • 5+ years of experience building scalable, high volume, and low latency services and web-based APIs.
  • Proficiency in our tech stack — Node.js, Typescript, Express, SQL, Docker, Microservices, PostgreSQL, and AWS (ECS, CloudFormation, RDS, Secrets Manager, S3, Redis, and more).
  • Experience developing and maintaining large scale ETL processes and data pipelines.
  • Familiarity with code versioning tools, such as GitHub.
  • An empirical analytical approach. You develop strong hypotheses, conduct spikes, and clearly communicate your findings.
  • A desire to share your expertise through documentation, mentorship, pairing and both written and verbal discussion.
  • A desire to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
  • High quality mindset -- write unit tests, proactively remedy defects and follow through to production.

Nice to Have Traits for This Role

  • Experience with security standards such as Web-based security, API keys, access tokens, and JWOT.
  • Experience building UIs using HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and React.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools such as GitHub Actions.
  • Strong focus on documentation such as visual artifacts, design documentation, etc.
  • Experience with Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI).

Our annual base compensation for this role ranges from $143,225 to $193,775 for most US locations and 5% to 10% higher for US locations with a higher cost of labor. Job level and actual compensation will be decided based on factors including, but not limited to, individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process (including skills and prior relevant experience, potential impact, and scope of role), market demands, and specific work location.
